Program Information for Agencies & Professionals

What is the program? The In-Home Breastfeeding Support Program in North Carolina is offered through Cooperative Extension of North Carolina State University. This program was designed to support prenatal women and mothers who choose to breastfeed their infants. This support is through prenatal contacts, classes and in-home visits after the baby is born.

The Program Assistant's and what we do
The Breastfeeding Support Program Assistant provides one on one contact to prenatal women through classes, phone calls, or visits. Classes teach the benefits of breastfeeding, the basics of breastfeeding, and the importance of the mother and infant nutrition. The PA will schedule individual follow-ups. Once the baby is born, the PA visits the mom in the hospital and follows up with a home visit to help the mom and baby with any problems or concerns and makes suggestions to improve their breastfeeding experience. The PA is available to assist the mom at anytime. Duration calls and home visits are made as required to follow mom and babies progress. Referrals are made to the proper health care person or agency whenever a problem or medical concern should arise. The Person County PA is Angel Wheeler. With great encouragement and support, she formed the 'MOMS of PERSON". It is a support group for prenatal, new and experienced moms to come together once a month to discuss and lend moral and educational support to one another through related topics on the joy's of parenting.

Participants The mothers who enroll in the program learn the fundamentals of breastfeeding their baby successfully, the basic positions for holding a baby to breastfeed and how to latch the infant onto the breast correctly. Mothers may how to wake a sleepy baby to breastfeed; how to recognize when a baby is hungry; or how often to nurse their newborn. Since each mom and baby is different, each mom learns what she needs to know for her situation.

Did You Know? The Surgeon General describes breastfeeding as one of the most important contributors to infant health. Breast milk provides a range of benefits for infant growth and development.

    Breast milk also:
  • Is the most complete form of nutrition for infants;
  • It helps improve infants' immunity to a variety of diseases
  • It improves mother's health by reducing postpartum bleeding and lowering the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
One of Angel's Many Success Stories
It was a journey, but well worth it. I have been working with a mom for her newborn premie that's still in NICU. Just a few days ago, I called to touch base with the mom and she had great news. For several months, she was unsuccessful with pumping and had started fenugreek, with little result. I asked that she speak with her doctor about Reglan. She did just that and all is great. But, wait, the victory is not all mine. With the milk finally flowin, neonatal nurses allowed the mom to nurse for the first time. The mom tells me that the let-down was overwhelming. It must have been such a joy to hold that tiny little baby and fill him with all her love. What a great victory!
