4-H Support Our Students/Person County

SOSSupport Our Students is a program which operates under the NC Cooperative Extension Service. S.O.S. programs are located at both Northern Middle School and Southern Middle School in Person County and follows the school system calendar. Students meet each day that school is in session with the exception of teacher work days, early release days and Fridays. The regular S.O.S. schedule is from 3:15 - 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Summer S.O.S. meets for three weeks in July. The location and dates for S.O.S .Summer Fun are announced prior to summer break.

Students enjoy the support and assistance of caring and qualified adults to assist with homework, provided tutoring, and supervise recreational activities. In addition, to homework help and recreation, students participate as 4-H club members. They and their families are presented with educational and leadership opportunities at the local, district, state and national level. Students who remain active in 4-H will later be eligible to apply for college scholarships.

What Is SOS

Proposed by Governor Hunt in 1994 and approved by the General Assembly, S.O.S. targets middle school youth during those critical after-school hours. Caring adults help them with homework and organize enrichment activities in a structured setting, to help ensure the North Carolina's children stay on the road to lifelong success.

The Support Our Students (SOS) Program is a community based after-school initiative that provides support and guidance to young people by involving them in constructive activities to keep them focused and out of trouble. The SOS Program provides high quality after-school activities for school-aged children through award of grants to neighborhood and community-based organizations. These programs provide comprehensive, collaborative delivery of services by public and non-public agencies to these children.

The SOS Program links young people with the caring adults in their community. The adults help them with homework and organize clubs and athletic activities in a structured setting designed for positive learning experiences. By involving middle school students in creative and educational activities with positive role models, the SOS Program helps ensure that North Carolina's young people stay on the road to lifelong success.

SOS: A Public/Private Partnership

By combining resources from public schools, agencies, businesses, and neighborhood-based nonprofits, S.O.S. awards state grants while encouraging communities to assume ownership of their individual local projects.

Local civic and community groups, businesses, schools, and individuals have donated more than $5 million in cash and in-kind contributions to S.O.S.

This year, the General Assembly recognized the success of S.O.S. by voting to expand the program into three additional counties, bringing the total number of counties served to 79."One reason why we're interested in the SOS program is to provide our students with an opportunity." "I'm sold on SOS!

A community commitment to help young people achieve success.
