Person County Mentors

What is it?

FAQ     Application
Person County Mentors is a Governor's One-on-One program operated by Person County 4-H and North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. 90% of all youth served during any 12 month period must:

  • Have been referred directly to the program by local law enforcement, juvenile court, a secure detention center, Eckerd's Wilderness Camp or Eckerd's Screening Committee, or a state training school; or

  • The Youth must have been referred to juvenile court during the 12 months prior to referral to the program.
Growing up is often a difficult and frustrating time. Person County Mentors is a program for the young people of Person County, 7-17 years old, who are having problems with growing up. They may have little or no support from a caring adult. They may feel like they are worthless. They may already be involved in the court system and they may feel like no one understands or cares. All these youth need is to improve their ability to deal with life appropriately. They also need and want someone who cares.

Each youth is matched with an adult mentor who has volunteered his/her time to build a one-to-one relationship in which both may learn and grow. Matches are made on the basis of volunteer preferences combined with common interests, personality, and location, because by the time an adult mentor is accepted into the program, the staff knows both people pretty well. The staff introduces the adult mentor to the youth and his/her family. A match is made and they may do several activities together. Such activities include bowling, fishing, rollerskating, amusement parks, and cookouts. If they like each other and want to continue together in the program, they are matched for one year.

The adult mentors are very special people who have volunteered to give a helping hand. They do not get paid for this, though they have to apply and be approved before being matched with a youth.

A volunteer adult mentor is asked to complete an application and personal interview, provide references, pass a criminal and driving record check, and attend six hours of training. They must be approved by the Screening committee before being matched with a youth. Volunteers need to attend two in-service training sessions and participate in several group activities with their youth. The adult mentor is asked to spend an average of hours per week for one year with the youth doing things they both like to do. They may choose to do a community project together. A monthly contact sheet is completed by the adult mentor so the program can keep track of the growth of the relationship.

At the end of one year of sharing activities with an adult mentor, the youth graduates from the program. However, friendships do not have limits, so hopefully, friends will continue to call each other and share activities.

Person County Mentors is a voluntary program. Adult and Youth are in the program because they want to be, and if at any time, they change their minds, they can withdraw. Both may realistically expect this adventure in friendship to be one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.
